VAPP: The bill’ll see the light of the day by God’s grace – Hon Mukhtar Isah Second reading billed for July 17 – Hon Shadalafiya reveals

Member representing Basawa Constituency and Chairman, Committee on Judiciary in Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Mukhtar Isah Hazo has assured the good people of the State that, the bill seeking prohibition of violence against persons which is currently before the assembly will see the light of the day by the grace of God.
When finally adopted, the bill, Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) would be a replicate of the Act passed into law at federal level towards the tail end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in 2015, seeking protection of all groups of persons against domestic violence including assault, battery, incest, and other injurious acts to human.
The lawmaker, who stated this at the end of a two-day legislative advocacy campaign retreat for the adoption of VAPP bill in Kaduna State facilitated by Gender Awareness Trust (GAT) with support from National Democratic Institute (NDI) on Saturday said, the bill will raise a lot of eyebrow but eventually scale through due to its importance to the people of the state.
To him, “I know this is one bill that will raise a lot of eyebrow, a bill that will attract good attention from colleagues and public.
“I want to call on my colleagues to go back and ponder on their jottings to see to it that important bill like this one is passed into law. But it will see the light of the day by the grace of God.”
Commending the participants, the Sponsors of the bill, Hon. Shehu Goro Shadalafiya hinted that, the second reading will be coming up on July 17, 2018 at the assembly’s chamber.
According to him, the second reading would have come up on June 26, 2018, but was postponed due to other official engagement by the Speaker of the house, Right Hon Aminu Abdullahi Shagali who wanted to personally preside over the reading due to importance he attached to the bill.
Shadalafiya said, “I am overjoyed to have the consent of 19 members to be here for this retreat where the content of the bill has been rigorously finetuned. This is unprecedented. They are not just here but they have contributed greatly to this important discussion.
“The speaker was also interested. The second reading supposed to be held on June 26 but because the speaker wanted to be there in person, it was postponed till July 17 when the house will be reconvening.”
He however called on the VAPP advocacy committee to give the public the support they need to understand and support the bill in the interest of all.
