Respect our services, Medical Scientists tell Doctors, patients
//Godwin Ekosin, Kaduna//
ASSOCIATION of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), over the weekend decry inadequate understanding of their importance in health care delivery by patients and their families and even colleagues within healthcare administration.
Chairman, AMLSN in Kaduna, Comrade Obadiah Sunday, who stated this while commemorating this year’s International Biomedical Laboratory Science with the theme: ‘Patient Safety First’, said, for any medical doctor to know what is wrong with patient, medical scientists must have diagnosed such patients before any drug could be prescribed or administered, hence the need for all to appreciate and respect them in their calling.
He also agreed with President Mohammadu Buhari’s directive that hospitals should first treat patients in emergency before demanding for money to save more lives in the course of their services.
According to him, healthcare service delivery is holistic where everyone in the value chain is important and should be accorded with maximum respect.
He added that medical laboratory scientists are one of the largest groups of health care professionals, “yet our role in medicine is poorly understood by the patients and even our colleagues within healthcare administration.”
He further added that, “Biometric Scientists play an important role in diagnosis, quality development and assurance, treatment, development and public health care.
“No any other medical practitioners will say they don’t know us because without us, doctors cannot know what is wrong with patient. Without one another, no one part can work.
“You cannot have any data from anywhere in terms of disease outbreak without our involvement. We take samples and research to know the type of disease; be it Ebola, Lassa fever and what have you.
“So what we are saying in essence is that as we commemorate another year to promote awareness of our profession and the key role we play in in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and research in modern medical sciences, we are calling on everyone in the country to understand us better and appreciate what we do, “he added.
