A non-governmental organization known as Pathfinder International in collaboration with Family Health Advocacy Initiative in Nigeria (FHANI) on Friday held a discussion with health correspondents, editors and online journalists in Kaduna to update them on current statistics on child-spacing campaign in Kaduna state, Northwest Nigeria.
The discussion is basically to present to the public through the media, the current Performance, Monitoring and Accountability (PMA) 2020 survey results between 2014-2017 especially in Kaduna state.
Available information shows that, the research was conducted and collected data from eight Nigerian States including Anambra, Kaduna, Kano, Lagos, Nasarawa, Rivers and Taraba.
In her welcome address, Communication Officer, FHANI, Hajia Hauwa Salauwa told the gathering that, the role of the media in information dissemination is paramount in updating the public about the need for reproductive age women (between age 15-49) to use contraceptives in order to help them prepare for number of children they can cater for and live a healthy life.
Also speaking, Programme Officer, Reproductive Health/Family Planning, Pathfinder International, Dr. Sakina Bello said, her organization, which clocks 60 years this year is currently implementating varying projects in 20 countries including Nigeria.
She said, Pathfinder International believed that a lot can be achieved when Civil Society Organizations and Media are involved because they serve as voices to make governments do what they need to do to make child-spacing commodities available and accessible by women who want to use any of them.
According to her, it is also about reducing the number of women, newborn and infants that die due to complications around childbirth. It is assumed that, maternal and child mortality can be reduced by 40 percent through child/pregnancy spacing.
