Kad govt, NOUN, HDTI sign pact on youths’ skills acquisition

KADUNA State Government, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Housing Developer Training Institute (HDTI) Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on youth skills acquistion programme.
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-rufai, who received other partners at Sir Ibrahim Kashim house, Kaduna, said skills is the backbone of development of every society as it will apart from providing the needed expertise, will also reduce the rate of unemployment.
Gov El-rufai, who was represented at the event by the secretary to state Government Mr Abbas Lawal, pointed out that the biggest problem facing the country is lack of skill training, quickly adding that, “KDSG is the biggest beneficiary of the project.
According to him, expanding the project to women is vital due to their involvement in developmental drive.
Chairman, HDTI, Mr Olabode Afolayan, who is the ajor partner on youths skill acquisition programme said, the programme is to take off unemployed youth off the street.
“At the end of the day, we want to see kaduna state exporting skill labour to other states of the Federation. We are starting with pilot scheme of 200 youths in eight different skill, “block laying and concreting, carpentry, welding and fabrication, and plumbing tilling, painting and decoration interlocking and land skipping, “he said.
According to him, that the training is expected to last for the period of ninety days which is three month
He said, at end the programme the people will have a level one apprenticeship certificate to enable them to work with skill labor and to begin to grow the ladder
According to him, the requirement is the youth to participate and the ability to communicate in native language.
“We are bringing down education to grass root, it shouldn’t be the only way to communication should be English,
“We will use all available means to ensure that people knows what to do and grab the opportunity. Coming into skill acquisition is given back to the society.
According to him, the 53 hecter of land allocated to them, that they will deliver affordable houses that will accommodate minimum of 60 per cent of the youth of the first pilot scheme
In his part the Vice National Open University (NOUN) Prof Abddallah Adamu one of the partner for the programme thank KDSG for the gesture and the input on the skill acquisition programme
He said,the MOU between the State Gov and NOUN is a step toward skills acquisition and empowerment of youth NOUN The course with the highest number of student at NOUN in BSc enterprenuership programme which has 32,000 student across all level.
“Kaduna state has a total number of 4,000 student currently register with NOUN out of which 382 are offering BSc enterprenueship and business management the second highest in the state.bThis shows the significant of enterprenuership and skills acquisition as drivers drivers of self reliance “he said.
