Electricity union leader advocates 30% affirmative action

The President General of Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies, (SSAEAC), one of the two major labour unions in the nation’s power sector, Comrade Bede Opara has called on the women folk to join the mainstream of Nigerian labour movement.
Comrade Opara made the call yesterday in Kaduna while declaring open a two day workshop organized by SSAEAC for female members from northern states. He charged the participants to be “more active in labour unionism and all forms of social justice crusade.”
He described women folk as a very “veritable tools for social change who always attract attention whenever they speak.”
He disclosed that he shall continue to ensure the empowerment of the female members of SSAEAC in line with the global 30% affirmative initiative.
On the recent electricity tariff increase approved by the Government, Comrade Opara emphatically rejected the increase describing it as “untimely, insensitive and akin to adding salt to an injury.” According to him, the Nigerian labour movements under the auspices Trade Union Congress and the Nigerian Labour Congress shall mobilize Nigerians to reject the new tariff.
He called on the distribution companies to live up to their obligations before contemplating any tariff hike.
