A non-governmental organization known as the Hayin Banki Yanshinkafa Youth Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited on Sunday said it has begin process to rehabilitate 50 drug addicts in kawo, the largest community in Kaduna North local government area of Kaduna state.
Kawo is known for terrorization by groups of boys known as Sara -Suka and Yanshara gangs who go about stabbing anyone in sight after getting ‘high’ by illicit drugs.
But, the organization said, it has completed plans to stem the tide of hooliganism and terror in the area.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the group launched it office at Hanyin Banki in kawo, the President of the group, Umar Ilyasu Ahmed hinted that, among the 50 persons targeted for the rehabilitation, his group has succeeded in getting 20 persons among them on the track to shun hooliganism and drug addiction.
According to him, part of the strategies adopted was to identify the leaders of the group and educate them on healthy and productive ways of living, “one of the strategies we adopted was to pick the leaders of the bad gangs and we passed messages of hope for better future to them through the leaders.
“In fact the strategy is working maximally as they (the leaders) are even helping us to recover dangerous weapons from their peers.
“When we asked them what was their problem, the reason they ventured into hooliganism, they lamented they wished to continue their education but due to poor background and lack of parental and community support led them into thuggery.
“We are optimistic that the thuggery in the this community will soon be a thing of past.
“We have been organizing tutorials to let them know the importance of education to their future. We try to discourage them not to allow smoking and drug addiction prevent them from reaching the promised land. We gave them a good example that we have doctors, lawyers among us and that they too can become someone in life.
“There is still future in them and there is possibility for them to become valuable. Most of them we tutored and wrote WAEC, NECO passed their exams”, he noted.
