Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has advised Online journalists to be guided by the ethics of the profession in the discharge of their statutory duties.
Lai Mohammed, gave this advice in Kaduna on Tuesday 10th May, 2016, at
a closed door parley with online publishers under the umbrella of
Arewa Online Publishers Forum.
He noted that many bloggers and online operators are not journalists and therefore do not observe the ethics of journalism.
“They publish without properly understanding the implications of their
posts. Some of them are even activists.”
The Minister said while the roles of the online publishers cannot be
underestimated, it was important for online publishers and bloggers to be
self-regulated in the discharge of their duties, “if you don’t self-regulate, you will self-destruct.”
Earlier, Chairman of the Forum, Mordecai Ibrahim, after briefing the minister of the activities of the Forum,
emphasised that members are trained and seasoned journalists who
practice the profession in accordance with its ethics. As a measure of
regulation, the chairman further explained that the Forum does not
admit quacks.
