SMASE trainings have improve teachers, students performance – NTI DG

Director General of National Teachers Institute (NTI), Kaduna, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu, Monday told media in Kaduna that the training the institute is offering teachers of science and mathematics has improved the academic performance of Nigerian students both in internal and examinations.
The DG also commended the efforts of States Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for their interests in Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education SMASE in the country.
He commended them for sending their teachers for training at the Centre for Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education at the institute.
The educationist, who stated these while declaring open the Cycle III capacity building workshop for science and mathematics teacher in Kaduna, said some states have confirmed to him that they is improvement in schools performance in science and mathematics subjects which shows that the training is not a waste of time.
The Director General explained that the training of teachers in Mathematics and Science Education will go a long way in improving education in those respective states.
According to him, the Cycly lll training workshop will training teachers from Abia, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Oyo and Yobe States with intention to actualize what they have so far learnt in cycle I and II, saying those that would undergo a week long training must be ready to acquire as much knowledge as they can because they were expected to share same with colleagues when get back to their respective states.
“Those states SUBEBs need to be commended for taken their time to send their teachers to be trained on SMASE project. This is really commendable and we hope other states will emulate those that send their teachers for training. We also urged the participants to try and castigate the training to their colleagues back home who were not opportune to be here for the training.
“The Cycle lll workshop aimed at making the teachers to actualize what they learnt in cycle I and ll. We want them to put what they learn in practice. It’s a train the trainer workshop. We are confidence that SMASE teachers are adequately trained.
“Some states have confirmed to us that that there is improvement in their schools in science and mathematics subject as a result of training the NTI is offering their teachers,” he said.
Desk Officer, SMASE, who is came from Ojo State, Southwest Nigeria, Mr. Adeyemi Adewale, said the training was good and important for teachers as it will enable them to teach science and mathematics as much as improving the quality and confidence of teachers in the country.
