NUJ may name Kaduna secretariat after Gen Tanko

NIGERIAN Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council, is considering naming the secretariat after the late former Military Governor of the State, General Tanko Ayuba as a way of immortalising him.
The council is hinging this decision on the contribution of the late military Governor to the development of journalism in the State through provision of plot where the secretariat is built today.
The decision of the council, which was contained in a communique issued after its Congress in Kaduna by Dauda Idris, added was in recognition of his contribution to the development of the Council during his tenure as the military governor of the state.
The communique read in part, “the late Ayuba, the Congress noted was responsible for the relocation of the Council Secretariat from its temporary place opposite New Nigerian Newspapers, to the present one after approving the allocation of the land.
“Congress ratified the resolution to name the Council Secretariat after the late Mr Ayuba as part of its annual press week activities in November,2016”.
The council also appreciated the State government over support to the activities of the council, while cautioning members over unethical practices in the course of performing their official duties.
“This resolution was arrived at by the Council after its Congress held on Wednesday, presided over by the Chairman, Comrade Garba Muhammad.
“The council was particular about the support given to it by the government that led to the tremendous success recorded on the public enlightenment, rally and lecture on the activities of Kaduna State Traffic and Environmental Law Enforcement Agency (KASTELEA)”, added the communique.
The Congress however frowned at unprofessional conducts by some members, warning them to desist from such or ready to face the consequences alone, vowing that the council would not hesitate to wield the big stick by enforcing all the necessary punitive disciplinary measures as contained in the constitution of the NUJ.
Practicing journalists in Kaduna are also advised to register and validate their membership with the union.
“Those without minimum qualification are also advised to come forward and register with the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) to upgrade their qualification, get the minimum qualification and acquire the necessary knowledge”.
