Northern Youth Forum (AYF) on Sunday called on the presidential candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, to accept the result of the February 23 election that saw re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari for second term.
The youth Forum also congratulated President Buhari over his emergence as the winner of the election, urging him to put God and masses at heart as he champions the affairs of the country for another four years.
The Forum in a statement by its National Director, Public Affairs, Bello Abdulhamid, urged the PDP candidate to put the past behind him and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship.
The statement read in part, “we are calling on the president to use this second golden opportunity given to him to tackle some of the challenges that he has seen in his first term. Especially in the northern part of the country where the people have suffered from insurgency and other forms of insecurity.
“The people of the North have shown faith in your administration by coming out enmass to vote for you, we are employing you to keep that faith. AYF is happy with your promise to give special consideration to the youths and women, it is in line with our ideology and hope your administration will actualize that.
“AYF also wish to use this spirit to call on the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to accept the results of the elections in good faith. He fought a brave and a good fight but not all participants like in any competition will come out victorious. They must be winners and those that will not win.
“AYF believes that as a true democrat, it is time Alhaji Atiku Abubakar show Nigerians that he truly wanted to serve them, by joining hands with President Muhammadu Buhari to move Nigeria forward which is what he would have done if elected to lead the country. Nigerians have spoken in a free and fair exercise, Atiku should show character by accepting the will of the people.
“In the spirit of the mood of the country, Arewa Youth Forum, the umbrella organization of all youths in the North wish to commend the Independent National Electoral commission, (INEC) for again making Nigerians proud.
“In spite of the initial hiccups that lead to the shifting of the elections, professor Mahmood Yakubu and his team at the commission were able to surmount the challenges and came up with a process that majority of Nigerians are happy with and commended also by the international community.”
