Government Junior Secondary School, all girls, located along Independence Way, Kaduna, Kaduna North local government area of Kaduna State is in dare need of toilet facilities.
The surrounding bushes within and without the school premises have been saving haven for the girls in the junior session while others in the senior session of the school have access to toilet facilities.
This development contradicts the campaign against open defecation by the Kaduna State Government in partnership with development partners like UNICEF, the dangers which these 1,000 female students exposed to daily was better imagined.
Chairman, School Board Management Committee (SBMC), Malam Musa Haruna, told a team of journalists working around procurement (Open Government Partnership) who visited the school that, there was an urgent need for Kaduna state government, Kaduna North LGA, philanthropists, UNICEF and non-governmental organisations to come to their aid in building a block of the toilet to save the girls from the danger of being exposed to dangerous reptiles.
Haruna, who is also the Village Head of Ja’afaru Estate said, a block of toilet will save the girls from indecent exposure to infectious disease and snakebite.
“Our major challenge in school is the lack of toilet facilities. The girls are exposed daily to lots of dangers when they are pressed and needed to ease themselves.
“At times when they can no longer hold it, they enter the nearby bush to answer the call of nature thereby being exposed to snakes and other reptiles.
“The lack of toilet facilities also create room for unhygienic practices as some of them in a bid to reduce pressure look for any available corner or back of classrooms to pee. Some of them are forced to expose themselves indecently to neighbouring quarters when they have to urinate in a hurry.
“We are calling on the government, Kaduna state ministry of education, Kaduna State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Unicef, international donor agencies and philanthropists to come to our aid and build a block of the toilet for the school to reduce the danger and challenges faced by the girls,” Malam Haruna, added.
