Don’t be used against Senate, group tells Minister of Justice
….Urges Buhari to call his men to order
//Godwin Ekosin, Kaduna//
Group, Coalition Against Political Victimization (CAPV) Wednesday condemned what it termed political victimization and persecution of the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.
The group, in a statement signed by its President, Abdulsamad Amadi copy of which was made available to media in Kaduna, frowned at the recent move by the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney General of the Federation to arraign the Senate President and his deputy, Dr Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu respectively on a fresh charges.
The statement read, “we are here again speaking up, against some actions that is gradually becoming a big threat to our democracy. It is no longer news that some persons with vested interests have been instigating and watering the unwarranted and politically motivated trial of the President of the Senate of
the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. This trial has
been a very huge distraction to the Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki whom we all know is determined to play his role in the task of rebuilding our nation and its nose diving economy.
“Every member of the public is very aware that this so called forgery case has since been resolved at the floor of the Senate. For some people to now want to capitalize on the issue now shows the extent they are willing to go in order to scuttle the leadership of the 8th Senate.
“It is obvious that there is a move
orchestrated to cripple the legislature in order to make it ineffective and nonfunctional irrespective of how detrimental such actions will be to the polity,” the statement added.
The group further stressed that “the actions of the Attorney General and the Minister of Justice is very unfortunate as it is happening at a time when Nigerians are looking up to the executive and party leaders to prefer solutions to the country’s ramshackled economy.
“The executive and the APC leadership are more interested in arms twisting aimed at forcing a leadership change in the senate than solving the numerous economic and infrastructure problems facing us as a nation.
“We are aware that for peace to reign and for the smooth running of this
administration, the Senate has on numerous occasions ignored many
infrastracture and inefficiencies of the executive. Obviously, the gentle strides of the lion are being mistaken as a sign of weakness.
“Consequently, we condemn in its enterity, the recent case initiated by the office of the attorney general and minister of Justice against the leadership of the Nigerian Senate.
We call on all Nigerians and the international community to stand up against this act of recklessness and impunity. We will not fold our arms and watch few individuals with vested interests scuttle our democracy.
“We therefore call on President Mohammadu Buhari to call those he selected to work with to order. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice should as a matter of urgent national interest withdraw the baseless charges of forgery initiated against the principal officers of the Senate. Failure to do this, further shows President Buhari’s support to the ongoing coup to our democracy and democratic process,” the group warned.
