BREAKING: serious protest in Kaduna over alleged KASTELEA extortion, harassment, as residents trek kilometers
In Kaduna on Monday, there is heavy protest by commercial vehicle drivers over what they described as ‘unhealthy’ extortion and harassment of their members by men of Kaduna State Transport and Environmental Agency (KASTELEA).
Some of them told Gobroadsheet that once KASTELEA arrest them, they have to cough out between N20,000 and N50,000 which had rendered many of them jobless as they could not afford the charges levelled against them over minor offences like ‘wrong’ parking.
Already, people who resident at Sabon Tasha, the hub of the protest are forced to be treking kilometers if they are strong enough to get to their varying destinations for the day’s business.
As at the time of filing this report, no single KASTELEA staff is on duty while nothing is been done to put the situation under control as there is no single policeman on sight.
Meanwhile, the shutdown only affected the city major road where most of the commercial vehicle use.
“El-Rufai must come here to come and see what his boys are doing to us. Some of our members have become jobless because their vehicles have been seized by this people called KASTELEA. We don’t want them again. Their own is becoming too much”, one of them said.
Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai had shortly after he became governor created KASTELEA to replace VIO in the state and he has subsequently sent men of FRSC to highway to guide against duplication of services.
