Kaduna Polytechnic suspends strike
(KAD POLY ASUP CHAIRMAN, DR. IBRAHIM AND HIS EXCO MEMBERS)
Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) Kaduna Polytechnical chapter on Monday evening announced the suspension of its one month old strike.
Chairman of the union in the polytechnic, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim announced the suspension of industrial action in a communiqué issued after the intervention of National Board for Technical Education and readiness of the school management to begin payment of allowances that led to the strike.
The chairman said in the communiqué that, the decision to suspend the strike was reached as a result of arbitration meeting organized by the Executive Secretary National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Kaduna Polytechnic principal officers and ASUP Executive members.
It read in part, “the union agreed to suspended the strike after the management of Kaduna Polytechnic has agreed to commence the immediate payment of the two months outstanding arrears of Peculiar Academic and Hazard Allowances (PA&HA).
“The congress of ASUP had earlier directed on 30th December, 2016 that until the 5months arrears of peculiar academic and hazard allowances are fully paid the indefinite strike continues. As a result of the indefinite strike, the management of Kadpoly paid three months arrears of PA&HA but the congress was unanimous on five months PA&HA or indefinite strike continues”.
Now that the management has commenced the payment of the outstanding two months arrears of PA&HA the strike is suspended, certainly not without a word of warning from the ASUP that;
“If the management of Kaduna Polytechnic refused to swim-over their slippery character of misapplication, misappropriation and diversion of resources meant for the development of Kaduna Polytechnic, they should be ready to face a persistent, consistent and stiff opposition because we shall not allow the chill of cynicism, corruption and stealing of public fund extinguish the flame of our optimism for a better Kaduna polytechnic”, the communiqué added.
